Alliance of Equals Liaden Universe® Sharon Lee Steve Miller 9781476781488 Books
This book serves as a bridge to begin the process of weaving together a lot of separate threads and previous story lines. While it focuses mostly on Padi (Shan's daughter) coming of age, other favorite characters are brought in and you get a tantalizing glimpse of what's happening with them, for example, Daav and his life-mate, Jeeves's children, Theo, the Uncle, the meddling Tree, etc.How these authors keep up the same fascinating style of storytelling, book after book, is beyond me. This book is every bit as enthralling as all the rest. The only problem, and this is a huge one: it leaves you ravenous for more!! Can't wait until the next one! Love this book.
ALERT!!!!!!! For all you hard core Liaden fans--I just discovered an awesome treat. If you go to the author's website at korval dot com, click on the link to baen and you can read a free short story "Wise Child" that is set in the Liaden universe, about a new AI in training. The story ties in with Tolly and how he came to be on the run and in hiding, which is mentioned in Alliance Of Equals.

Alliance of Equals Liaden Universe® Sharon Lee Steve Miller 9781476781488 Books Reviews
I've been reading Miller & Lee since the early 90s. I've read books about spies, books about wizards (dramaliz), books about life on an outer Rim, uncivilized planet. I've read books about research fraud and books about giant alien turtles. I've read books about Traders and ship captains and intelligent robot butlers and cats who can use magic and sentient trees.
Alliance of Equals is a book about teachers. Not your average work-a-day teachers who drone on through mathematics lessons and historical events, but the kind of life-changing teachers that you never forget.
We're introduced to Padi, a Trader-in-Training and are walked through a lot of her lessons as she realizes what it means to be a Trader and how to wisely invest her funds that might be profitable from one planet to the next, including an absolutely lovely scene as Padi bargains and barters, while her father, the Master Trader, discovers that he might just be a little too invisible for his own good. We also see Padi learning martial arts, unlearning terrible lessons from her past (you don't always need to kill someone just to be safe, certainly a lesson that ought to be heard in certain parts of our own world), learning the art of being calm and centered. Padi is a brilliant character and I love looking at the Liaden Universe through the eyes of someone who's seeing it for the first time, having just come of age, Padi is learning to deal with, protect, and maintain her honor.
We're also introduced to Tolly, a mentor for newly born AIs. If you've read any of Anne McCaffry's Ship Who series, these characters and situations will absolutely delight. A rogue AI, tied into a half dozen different computers, is slowly losing his mind... Tolly, trained to Mentor such devices and to bring them into full sentience and independence, is working in a difficult situation. Not only is he an outlaw and on the run from the company that "designed" him, but the AIs themselves are illegal, so he's got to hide his work while he's doing it. In the meanwhile, he's working with an enemy gone native, the indomitable Haz, a woman who has lost everything and can't figure out what she's gained in the fortunes of war that turned her life inside out. The interactions between Haz and Tolly alone are worth the cover price.
In the midst of these two main lines, Lee & Miller expertly catch us up on the goings-on of the greater universe; wonderful for those of us who've been following these characters for ages and intriguing for new readers... (who are Daav and Aelliana? There's a book or three that concentrate on just them.) We drop in for a moment on some old favorites, get little bits of news and insights. I bought the book in the morning, finished it by that afternoon, and have already started the countdown until the next novel.
Every time I finish one Lee and Miller's Liaden® books I always have two reactions. First, I want to reread the entire series (this is how you know a series is good! I have all but this one in hardcover and I'll get it for my birthday! I have most of them on kindle!). Second, I immediately start jonesing for the next one!! Now I won't bother the authors because that would take away from their writing time. But I agree with Anne McCaffrey, these are comfort books. I reread them throughout the year and no matter how many they write I am never disappointed.
ALLIANCE OF EQUALS seems to take place concurrently with DRAGON IN EXILE.
One thread follows the Dutiful Passage trying to forge new trade routes while being subverted by their own reputation and subtle actions of the Department. This is Padi's first tour as an apprentice trader since Plan B was invoked and she spent time at Runig's Rock. The stress of that situation has had a lasting effect on all the children and Padi is dealing with the effect on her. Her elders are watching but giving her a chance to heal without their intervention.
Another thread of this story follows Daav and Aelliana who are still with the Uncle and undergoing big changes of their own. Changes the worry Daav and surprise the Uncle and which are definitely orchestrated by Korval's tree.
The third thread stars Tocohol Lorlin who is Jeeves' AI daughter, Tolly Jones who is a manufactured human who socializes AIs, and Hazenthull Explorer who is an unintended passenger and Tolly's friend. Their purpose is to see if Admiral Bunter, an AI created and abandoned at Jamiatha's Jumble Stop, can be socialized or destroyed. Meanwhile, Tolly is on the run from his creators who want to use them for their own gain.
All three threads are entertaining and further the main story arc of Korval settling on Surebleak and remaking the clan now that they are not part of Liad. Things will go so much better when they are finally able to root out the remaining bits of the Department who are still ruthlessly trying to rid the universe of Korval. I liked the focus on characters who are not part of Korval and I liked getting to know Padi.
While I wouldn't necessarily recommend starting with this book, I think that those familiar with the Liaden Universe will enjoy it very much. Readers new to the Liaden Universe will get a very satisfying story and know that there are at least 18 other stories that further build on these characters, these families, and this world.
